Keep Stripe Billing as your subscription engine — plans, invoices, billing cycles, dunning — while Yuno processes every charge through your own providers and routing rules. Your subscription logic doesn’t change: only the checkout moves to Yuno, and Yuno takes care of the rest.

How it works

Stripe’s third-party payment processing mode lets an external processor execute the charges for your Billing subscriptions. With Yuno:
  1. Signup: your customer pays the first charge through your Yuno checkout (3DS, anti-fraud and smart routing included). Yuno securely vaults the card.
  2. Activation: Yuno automatically registers the payment in Stripe, links the vaulted card to the subscription, and Stripe activates it — Stripe never sees the card.
  3. Renewals: when Stripe issues a renewal invoice, Yuno charges the vaulted card as a merchant-initiated transaction (with network-compliant stored credentials) and reports the outcome back to Stripe. The invoice is marked paid automatically.
  4. Recovery: failed renewals follow the retry schedule you configure in Stripe; each retry is executed by Yuno across your provider cascade.
  5. Refunds: refund through Yuno as usual — Yuno reports it to Stripe and creates the credit note.
Your backend keeps listening to the same Stripe webhooks you use today (invoice.paid, customer.subscription.updated, …) for entitlements. No changes there.

Prerequisites

  • A Yuno account with your providers connected and routing published.
  • A Stripe account with Billing and third-party payment processing enabled (request it from Stripe).
  • Onboarding with Yuno: share a restricted API key from your Stripe account with your Yuno contact so Yuno can register the webhook endpoint and report payments. Yuno stores it encrypted and uses it only for your account.

Step 1 — Create the subscription in Stripe

Create the Customer and Subscription in Stripe exactly as you do today (use payment_behavior: default_incomplete). Keep the customer and subscription ids — you’ll send them to Yuno in the next step.
Create the subscription at checkout time and collect the payment in the same session: Stripe requires the first payment to be reported within 23 hours of the subscription’s creation.

Step 2 — Collect the first payment with Yuno

Run your normal Yuno checkout and create the payment from your backend with two additions: vault_on_success and the external_subscription object linking the payment to your Stripe subscription (see Create payment):
That’s it. When the payment is approved, Yuno automatically: creates a payment method reference in your Stripe account (no card data), attaches it to the subscription as its default payment method, and reports the payment so Stripe marks the first invoice as paid and activates the subscription.

Free trials

When signup starts a trial, there is no first charge — the trigger is the $0 card verification of the enrollment flow instead. Create the Stripe subscription with trial_end as usual, then enroll the card through the Enroll payment method endpoint with the external_subscription object nested inside verify:
Use the same currency for the verification as the subscription’s — renewals are charged in the subscription’s currency.
On a successful verification Yuno links the vaulted card to the trialing subscription (its default_payment_method in Stripe becomes the Yuno reference) and nothing is charged or reported — no invoice is due. At trial end, Stripe issues the first real invoice and Yuno charges it with network-compliant stored credentials, exactly like any renewal.

Renewals — nothing to do

Every renewal is automatic: Stripe finalizes the invoice → Yuno charges the vaulted card → Stripe marks it paid. You’ll see each charge as a normal payment in your Yuno dashboard and reports, and the invoice lifecycle in Stripe as always.

Failed payments and recovery

Configure a custom retry schedule in Stripe (Smart Retries are not available in third-party processing mode — a Stripe limitation). Each scheduled retry triggers a new charge attempt through Yuno, executed across your routing and provider cascade. If all retries are exhausted, your Stripe dunning configuration decides the subscription’s fate, as usual.

Refunds

Refund through the Yuno API or dashboard as with any payment. Yuno reports the refund to Stripe and creates the corresponding credit note so your Stripe books stay consistent. Partial refunds are supported.

Changing the customer’s card

Collect a new payment (or run a new verification, for trialing subscriptions) sending the same external_subscription.id. Yuno vaults the new card and switches the subscription’s default payment method in Stripe automatically. Renewals continue without interruption.

Not supported in this mode

Per Stripe’s third-party processing mode: Stripe Checkout, the Stripe-hosted invoice page, Smart Retries and recovery emails, Stripe-managed disputes, and Stripe-initiated refunds. Embedded Stripe pricing tables are not compatible (the checkout is Yuno’s).
